Inc-LOO-sion / Exclusion
Sound art in public toilets

Inc-LOO-sion/Exclusion is a sound installation in public and half public toilets in art and culture institutions.

The material for the installations consists of the Not Heard, the marginal, the “not valuable“, the accidental, the contingent, the so called “garbage”.

Untill now the installation took place at the Berliner Volksbühne, the Kunstraum Kreuzberg and theGemäldegalerie Berlin.

It’s no accident that our subject coincides with the starting point of System Theory, the distinction between inclusion and exclusion (system and environment).

Realisation
It is possible to do a performance at the opening of the installation.

The Place
The “public toilet“ is a place of rest and non presentation. It is a place where one doesn’t expect representation and where one doesn’t stay in order to receive something. Yet the toilet symbolizes something hidden, not valued and excluded.

On the level of use the toilet appears as a special place of privacy. Here one has not to take care for how one appears. In an art exhibition besides the aisthesis always works the taste. In the taste dimension it is not about perceiving a work of art but about perceiving the way one is perceived during this perception und to put oneself in a corresponding position. This positioning runs idle on the toilet. In this way we hope to address the individual backstage.

Because the visit of a toilet doesn’t have its purpose in itself but is dictated by functions of the body there is no possibility to evade the sound installation. That what is neither heard nor seen, that what is devalued and what one thinks is uninteresting attains the ear of the visitor.

The symbolic meaning of the place appears above all in the description and in its being picked out as a central theme. The toilet here is the devalued place. In putting the socially devalued and overlooked into this context of devaluation we reproduce a social reality and by doing this we leave the base of political correctness.

Theory
The thematic emphasis inclusion/exclusion will be treated in front of two horizons: on the one hand socially in a concrete way – as social inclusion and exclusion, access to education, information and communication, to knowledge, scarce goods and to places, not least by having or not having money and papers – and on the other hand in front of the horizon of identity, self description, social role and biography. Every reputation constructs itself with the help of secrecy and every identity takes shape in connection with the other.

The project tries to make the Not Heard been heard. What the Not Heard means in detail depends on the social context.

Synopsis

The material for the installation consists of the Not Heard, the marginal, the "not valuable", the accidental, the contingent, the so called "waste".

For the realisation of the project we want to take up parasitically to symbolically charged rooms, to places of art, culture and science. By doing that we are yet remaining the always (included) excluded, the outsiders, the lepers. We affirm by that in an exemplary way the devaluation of the foreign and accidental.

"When you deal with immigrants and you realized that the fact that these people cross these borders is an act which shows great autonomy to which we want to refer politically and which has nothing to do with them being victims of flight, expulsion, torture or totally bad capitalism and so on, because exactly that deprives people from their subjectivity - like the left wing normally was or is still thinking what then leads to this strange assistance racism or this pitying, church asylum like "we will just help them to a certain degree" but where the relationship remains clearly defined who then is in the position to help whom and who then determines how long this help will be valid and when it will not be valid any longer and by what kind of criteria it is granted - then this moulds the way you think about the world."
